GMC requirements

Any doctor wishing to practise medicine in the UK must be registered by the General Medical Council (GMC). In addition, the GMC must have provided them with an up-to-date licence to practise medicine.

For more information on registering, licensing, and establishing GMC eligibility, please visit the GMC website and/or email their helpdesk at [email protected].

GMC status in relation to IMT application

There has been a change for 2026 recruitment regarding when full GMC registration is required. The requirements for having full GMC registration and a licence to practise are:

  • Full GMC registration: This must be gained by the time you submit your application and you are included on the the GMC register. If your record cannot be found on the register, you will not be eligible to apply.
  • Licence to practise: You do not need a licence to practice until the intended post start date of an accepted offer.

When you apply, you will be required to enter your registration number. The system does some verification checks to ensure it is a valid number and matches the name in which you have made your application. In most cases no further information is required beyond supplying your number and you will be contacted if any clarification is required.
