Wessex is a naturally beautiful area in the prosperous south of England, with major population centres in Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth and Poole along the south coast.

Training rotations are based in nine acute hospitals across the region:

IMT Programmes are usually hosted in one or two hospitals during the three year rotation.

During the first two years, posts rotate through six posts of four months' duration. The third year consists of two x six month posts.

All will provide exposure to the core specialties and some rotations provide opportunities in other areas such as dermatology, rheumatology and renal medicine. All the hospitals have established acute medical units incorporated into the rotations to give training in the acute aspects of IMT.

The Wessex team plan the first two years of rotations at the time of offer, and candidates are given the chance to preference all of the available rotations. At the time of offer, some third year placements are confirmed whilst some are to be confirmed later on in the programme.

Wessex has very well established support for trainees and their supervisors.

MRCP teaching is available in every trust as well as NHS England, Wessex based courses free to Wessex trainees. Additional leadership and development courses are available at NHS England, Wessex for trainees wishing to develop themselves as teachers or in other roles.

The Wessex patient safety programme includes a mandatory one day course followed by a supported programme for trainee projects and the opportunity to present at the regional patient safety day in the early Summer.

Additional IMT specific training days are being developed to augment the local trust IMT programmes.
