Northern Ireland

IM1 will consist of three 4 month placements which will include 4 months elderly care medicine and 2 other medical specialties and will be based in one trust. There will also be an emphasis on participation in the acute unselected take. IMT2 year will be a combination of 3 and 6 month rotations again based in one trust. There will be a 3 month post in ICU medicine and a focus on clinics and ambulatory medicine. Trainees who complete the requirements for IM1 and IM2 can move to IM3 which will be two 6 month rotations in two trusts and will include involvement in leading the acute unselected take.

Each year will be based in one trust and trainees will have one educational supervisor for the year. Trainees will rotate each year to a different trust.  

Taster weeks can be organised where training rotations have not provided exposure to a desired specialty.

Trainees are able to preference IMT 1 and 2 at the time of recruitment. The rotations have been developed to meet the requirements of the IMT curriculum.

Each trainee is invited to an evening induction meeting and in addition to local Educational and Clinical Supervision, trainees are invited to annual individual induction meetings  with the Training Programme Director. All trainees are invited to attend ARCPs in person.

Regional teaching includes 10 half-day sessions which take place via zoom. PACES preparation teaching takes place at local Trusts. Trainees are supported to complete the IMPACT course.  A simulation training course is being developed for IMT2s.  The Deanery has developed a modular, generic skills training programme for all specialty trainees including Internal medicine trainees. Trainees are updated on educational opportunities via a monthly electronic newsletter.

The Deanery is committed to on-going quality improvement of the IMT programme. Rotations are reviewed by the Deanery and trainees are encouraged to give feedback on their posts on a six monthly basis.

Northern Ireland is famed for its friendly welcome and its emphasis on good quality of life. It can be crossed by car, north to south or east to west, in about 2 hours and this provides access to a rich variety of natural beauty, outdoor activities and vibrant cities.

The education system is recognised as excellent and property prices are lower than those in other UK locations. The cultural attractions include dramatic coastlines, castles, mountains, lakes, some of the best golf courses in the world, superb fishing, water sports, walking trails, scenic drives and historical landmarks.

Northern Ireland also has many fine restaurants, cinemas, leisure centres and renowned theatres, galleries, arts and entertainment centres, and pubs and clubs. What’s not to like?
